Introduction to Metal Cleaning, Derusting & Zinc Phosphating

Surface preparation is the foundation of durable metal finishing. Before painting, powder coating, or other protective treatments, metals must undergo a systematic cleaning and conversion process to ensure maximum adhesion, corrosion resistance, and long‑term performance.

Our facility specializes in metal cleaning, derusting, and zinc phosphating treatments—both cold and hot processes—including advanced modified and tricationic phosphating technologies. These processes are carried out through a carefully controlled 8‑Tank Processing System, ensuring consistency, reliability, and superior quality.

Multi Tank Phosphating

the 8‑Tank Process used in metal surface preparation. This is the backbone of metal cleaning, derusting, and zinc phosphating operations, ensuring that every surface is properly treated before painting or coating.

1. Metal Degreasing Solutions

  • Description: The process begins with degreasing, where MP-Clean Category products are employed to remove oils, grease, and machining residues. This step is critical because any organic contamination left on the surface can compromise subsequent treatments. By using tailored cleaning agents, the metal surface is rendered chemically clean and ready for further processing.
  • Features:
    • High cleaning efficiency
    • Compatible with ferrous and non‑ferrous metals
    • Low foaming, easy rinsing
  • Applications: Automotive parts, fabricated components, heavy machinery.
  • Customer Benefits: Ensures a spotless surface for coating, reduces rework, and improves coating adhesion.
  • Products: MP-Clean Degreaser, HVD

2. Derusting / Pickling Agents

  • Description: Acidic formulations for removing rust, scale, and oxides. Acids such as inhibited hydrochloric or Sulfuric acid are used to dissolve rust, scale, and oxides. The process restores the base metal to a reactive state, free from corrosion products. Inhibited formulations are often preferred, as they minimize attack on the underlying metal while still effectively removing rust.
  • Features:
    • Fast rust removal
    • Controlled metal attack
    • Available in inhibited formulations to minimize base metal loss
  • Applications: Steel sheets, pipes, forgings, castings.
  • Customer Benefits: Restores fresh metal surface, extends product life, and enhances coating uniformity.
  • Products: MP-Clean Degreaser, HVD

3. Zinc Phosphating Systems

  • Description: Conversion coatings that form a crystalline phosphate layer. This is the heart of the process. The metal is immersed in a Anti-Corr-Series, which can be cold, hot, modified, or tricationic:
  • Variants:
    • Cold Phosphating: Room‑temperature, economical, light coatings.
    • Hot Phosphating: Elevated temperature, heavier coatings for demanding applications.
    • Modified Phosphating: Optimized for reduced sludge, thinner coatings, and eco‑friendly performance.
    • Tricationic Phosphating: Incorporates Zn, Ni, and Mn for superior corrosion resistance and uniformity.
  • Applications: Automotive bodies, appliances, defense equipment, industrial machinery.
  • Customer Benefits: Excellent corrosion protection, superior paint adhesion, extended coating durability.
  • Products: Anti-Corr-87, HVD

4. Surface Activation

Here, SA-Series, are applied to condition the surface. Activation promotes fine and evenly distributed phosphate crystal formation in the next stage. Without this step, phosphate coatings may form unevenly, leading to poor adhesion and reduced corrosion resistance.

5. Passivation

The final stage involves passivation solutions, either chromic or non‑chromic. This sealing process enhances corrosion resistance and stabilizes the phosphate coating. Non‑chromic alternatives are increasingly used for eco‑friendly compliance, while chromic passivation remains effective for demanding applications.
